Since Donald Trump became President of the United States, he has been making many changes to the body of representatives in the American government. One recently made adjustment was choosing Betsy DeVos to be the Secretary of Education of the United States.
Billionaire Betsy DeVos is a former Republican chairwoman from Michigan. Her choice as Education Secretary was and is very controversial. It culminated in a historical tie vote that was broken by Vice President Mike Pence. A tie vote for a Presidential Cabinet member has never happened before.
Many private school advocates praise this decision. They think that DeVos will work hard and develop new programs that give parents more school choices.
Being extremely rich, DeVos only has experience in private schools as that was all she attended and exposed her children to. For this reason, public school staff are worried that she will help push America’s public education system toward destruction. “I was surprised that that we didn’t get someone with more experience in public schools from the get go. Public schools are the base of the United States educational system,” Ms. Umanoff, a 7th and 8th grade math teacher, says.
Public schools across the U.S. have united and created a movement known as Red for Ed to protect this country’s public education. Teachers in the United States believe that public education is extremely important. They believe that instead of investing money in a voucher program to allow kids to go to private school, that money, plus the money people pay in their taxes, should go to improving public schools, making stellar education more available to less fortunate kids around the world.
